The civil and environmental engineering program at BYU has open enrollment. This department trains students for professional careers in structural engineering, water resources, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and transportation engineering. Structural engineers focus on analyzing and designing structures like buildings and bridges. They use physics, mathematics, and engineering principles to create designs that are both safe and efficient, often employing advanced computer models. Common materials in this field include steel, aluminum, concrete, masonry, wood, and composites. Water resource and environmental engineers work on projects such as pipeline systems, water treatment facilities, dams, flood control structures, waste disposal sites, and environmental restoration. They utilize computer modeling to predict storm runoff, flooding, and the spread of contaminants in water systems. Environmental engineers also assess and minimize pollutants from various sources to protect air, land, and water quality. Geotechnical engineers design structures involving earth materials, including foundations for buildings and bridges, retaining walls, earth dams, highway embankments, tunnels, and landfill liners. Their work relies on field and lab tests of soil and rock, combined with empirical and computer models, to ensure safe and cost-effective designs. Traffic and transportation engineers apply scientific methods to the planning, design, construction, operation, and management of transportation systems like highways, airports, and mass transit. They aim to facilitate the safe, efficient, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally sustainable movement of people and goods. Computer models and simulations are commonly used for geometric design and for planning, operating, and managing transportation networks, including intermodal systems.
Licensure: This program fulfills the educational criteria for obtaining a professional license or certificate in Utah. Students seeking licensure or certification in other states should consult the relevant BYU academic advisement center and the licensing authority in their intended state of employment for guidance on meeting those requirements.
