Chemists and biochemists explore the core phenomena shaping our natural environment, examining atomic architecture and how these building blocks combine to create compounds and substances. They investigate reaction pathways, including biological processes like genetic information flow from DNA to RNA to proteins. Researchers create theoretical frameworks to organize and interpret observations about material behavior. Chemical concepts form the basis for understanding diverse topics, from life's molecular machinery to geological formations. These disciplines serve as crucial underpinnings for medicine, various engineering fields (particularly chemical engineering), electronics, energy systems, environmental studies, materials development, pharmaceutical science, and nearly all industrial production.

These dynamic scientific fields play indispensable roles in human civilization. Given their comprehensive scope covering all material phenomena, they're categorized into five specialized domains. These span from protein production control and cellular communication mechanisms (biochemistry) to drug molecule creation (organic chemistry), novel material development (inorganic chemistry), energy transfer analysis (physical chemistry), and substance identification in medicines, biological samples, and ecosystems (analytical chemistry).

Modern chemistry and biochemistry extend well beyond traditional laboratory glassware. They incorporate advanced techniques like genetic engineering, utilizing cutting-edge equipment including mass analyzers, heat measurement devices, separation systems, high-speed centrifuges, precision light sources, crystal structure analyzers, high-resolution imaging tools, and molecular fingerprinting instruments - all available to BYU undergraduates. Digital technology also significantly contributes, enabling tasks from molecular modeling to experimental data processing. These academic programs offer both challenging coursework and substantial intellectual fulfillment.

Program Objectives:
Core Chemistry and Biochemistry Competencies
Graduates will exhibit comprehensive understanding of fundamental theories across all chemistry branches: analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. They will achieve specialized expertise in biochemical systems.
