The Department of Political Science seeks to deliver comprehensive education that enhances students' ability to examine political events, government operations, and their broader global and personal implications.
We cultivate these skills through diverse approaches, from statistical analysis of measurable data to historical comparisons of institutions and critical study of foundational texts. Our goal is to inspire students to actively participate in shaping their communities, governments, religious institutions, and global affairs.
Though our program isn't solely a liberal arts curriculum, professional preparation, or citizenship training, we transform politically engaged liberal arts students into knowledgeable graduates. They become equipped to participate in societal matters, pursue advanced political science studies, or enter other professional fields.
For this degree, the Political Science Department mandates at least 27 credit hours completed through BYU's on-campus courses (excluding Independent Study). These credits may also fulfill BYU's 30-hour graduation residency requirement.
