Learning French or Italian language and literature enhances critical thinking and communication abilities applicable across diverse careers. Learners gain expertise in listening, reading, writing, and speaking while using literary works to explore both culture-specific and universal themes. These languages serve as powerful tools for students pursuing music, art, history, European studies, international relations, library science, or comparative literature. Numerous students combine an Italian or French major/minor with fields like accounting or business management, or use it as groundwork for graduate programs in public administration, business, organizational behavior, dentistry, law, or medicine. Graduates often enter government service with embassies, the State Department, intelligence agencies, or other federal offices, while others join the travel industry with airlines, tour operators, hotels, or resorts.
Completion of a primary major in another discipline is mandatory.
The French and Italian Department mandates at least 15 major credit hours be completed at BYU for this degree.
