The English major offers an in-depth exploration of the English language and its literary traditions. Students in this program engage with language and literature as pathways to knowledge, artistic appreciation, and encounters with diverse perspectives. These studies serve as tools for creative expression, historical exploration, and personal growth. Through writing, English majors develop skills to (1) analyze and interpret their experiences and readings, and (2) effectively communicate their insights. Aligned with liberal arts principles, the English Department fosters essential abilities in writing, critical thinking, and discernment - building blocks for lifelong learning, meaningful contribution, and intellectual fulfillment.
Rooted in liberal arts education, English graduates possess versatile skills in analytical reading, logical reasoning, and articulate communication that serve them across professions. Career paths include education, publishing, legal professions, corporate sectors, media, and public service. Students may pursue secondary education certification, graduate studies in English, or combine their major with prerequisites for advanced degrees in law, business, healthcare, information science, or theological studies. Specialized concentrations enable preparation for careers in technical writing, editorial work, creative writing, and digital communication. Those complementing their studies with technology courses often enter IT fields. The program also provides strong foundations for government careers, particularly when paired with foreign languages, economics, political science, or history coursework.
The redesigned English major features specialized tracks, enabling students to focus their studies. Each major completes 15 credit hours in one of four concentrations: literary studies, literary media and cultures, professional writing and communication, or creative writing.
