The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance program welcomes all students to enroll. Those interested can declare Dance as their major when entering the university and will receive guidance from a dedicated dance advisor.
To complete this degree, the Dance Department mandates at least 30 credit hours of dance coursework completed on BYU's Provo campus. Note that BYU Independent Study courses don't fulfill this residency requirement, though these credits may contribute to the university's overall 30-hour graduation residency rule.
This degree offers diverse training in multiple dance styles, establishing a solid base for advanced degrees (MA, MFA, or PhD) while equipping graduates for careers in performance, instruction, or choreography outside academia.
The curriculum begins with at least 16 credits of technical training, featuring nine credits in modern and ballet techniques, one to three credits focusing on rhythmic footwork, partner work, and cultural dance forms, plus six additional credits in the student's preferred styles. Options include ballet, ballroom, jazz, contemporary, tap, and world dance, tailored to individual aspirations. Building on this foundation, students explore dance history, science, music, production, and conditioning, engage in genre-specific performance and teaching courses, and attend seminars offering diverse learning experiences. Flexible elective choices enable students to customize their education toward personal objectives.
