The Communications Studies emphasis serves as a complementary option to the other specializations within the School of Communications. While other emphases focus on delivering in-depth training in specific communication fields (such as Public Relations, Advertising, or Journalism), the Communications Studies program adopts a broader perspective.
Coursework in this emphasis provides students with core competencies in critical analysis, research methods, writing skills, public speaking, and communication theory, while allowing them to choose additional courses from the School's diverse elective catalog. These electives cover numerous topics, from digital platforms and mass culture to social advocacy and global communications. This blend of mandatory and carefully-chosen elective courses creates a highly adaptable degree path. However, this flexibility also requires students to collaborate closely with their academic advisors to articulate their career objectives and develop an effective educational roadmap.
