Chemists and biochemists explore the core mechanisms shaping our natural environment, delving into atomic architecture and how atoms combine to create compounds and substances. They investigate chemical reaction pathways, including those fundamental to biological functions like genetic information transfer from DNA to RNA to proteins. These scientists create conceptual frameworks (theories) that help interpret and connect observations about material behavior. Chemical concepts form the basis for comprehending diverse topics, from life's molecular biology to geological formations. These disciplines serve as crucial building blocks for medicine, engineering (particularly chemical engineering), electronics, energy production, environmental studies, materials science, pharmaceuticals, and nearly all industrial production methods.

Chemistry and biochemistry represent dynamic scientific fields critical to human survival. Given their comprehensive coverage of the physical world, they're organized into five specialized domains. These varied specialties encompass controlling protein production, molecular-level cell signaling and protein analysis (biochemistry), creating therapeutic compounds (organic chemistry), developing novel molecular architectures and materials (inorganic chemistry), examining energy transfer and molecular configurations through spectroscopy (physical chemistry), and evaluating pharmaceuticals, biological samples, and environmental pollutants (analytical chemistry).

These disciplines extend well beyond traditional laboratory glassware. They incorporate advanced techniques like genetic engineering, utilizing specialized equipment including mass spectrometers, calorimeters, chromatographs, ultracentrifuges, lasers, X-ray diffraction systems, electron microscopes, and NMR spectrometers - all tools that BYU undergraduates work with firsthand. Digital technology also significantly contributes to these fields, from molecular modeling to experimental data processing. Both chemistry and biochemistry programs offer challenging yet deeply satisfying academic journeys.
