Our doctoral program in composition and theory provides comprehensive training in musical composition, theoretical studies, and electronic music. You'll have dedicated time and resources to master compositional techniques under the mentorship of our distinguished faculty. Your original works will be showcased and recorded through our New Music Brandeis concert series for graduate composers. Additionally, you'll have opportunities for your compositions to be workshopped by the renowned Lydian String Quartet and visiting ensembles hosted by our music department.

The PhD curriculum incorporates essential pedagogical training for aspiring educators. During years two through five, you'll gain hands-on teaching experience as a fellow, with responsibilities including course development, delivering lectures, evaluating student work, and conducting one-on-one undergraduate advising sessions.

The program culminates with a doctoral dissertation comprising both a substantial original composition and an accompanying analytical research paper.
