Our PhD program provides rigorous training to develop professional expertise in anthropology or archaeology, whether for academic or non-academic careers. The curriculum focuses on comparative analysis, theoretical foundations, and hands-on fieldwork in both ethnographic and archaeological contexts. Students can specialize in either archaeology or sociocultural anthropology.
Regardless of your chosen specialization, earning a doctorate in anthropology equips you for diverse career paths in academia, development sectors, NGOs, and corporate environments. Our alumni have pursued careers as university faculty, nonprofit leaders, consultants, policy advisors, and research specialists.
As part of our competitive program, you'll join a vibrant academic community with access to extensive resources. Brandeis participates in the Boston Area Graduate Consortium and collaborates with the Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology. You'll refine your analytical, research, and writing abilities under the guidance of accomplished scholars committed to mentorship.
Additionally, the department offers funding opportunities for pre-dissertation research, language training, and professional growth. Comprehensive career support includes mentorship programs, skill-building workshops, mock interviews, and job talk preparation through both our department and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
PhD candidates frequently create and instruct writing seminars or practicums, engage in scholarly reading groups, coordinate academic events, publish research articles, and present at major conferences like the American Anthropological Association's annual meeting.
