Departmental honors candidates may qualify for an accelerated four-year BA/MA program with department endorsement. Applications are due by May 1 before the senior year begins.
A minimum grade of B- is mandatory in all introductory 100-level science courses. Prospective students must thoroughly review the 'Dual Bachelor's/Master's Degree Programs' section under 'Special Academic Opportunities' in this Bulletin. Key requirements include completing three years of residency and thirty-eight total courses, with no more than four from AP/IB credits, following university guidelines.
Brandeis provides both traditional chemistry majors and a chemical biology specialization for students applying chemical methods to biological research. Both pathways are available for BA and BS degrees, with an accelerated 4-year BA/MA option for highly qualified students. A chemistry minor is also offered.
The primary requirement for declaring a chemistry major is genuine enthusiasm for the subject.
Like other scientific disciplines, chemistry courses follow a sequential structure, making early enrollment crucial. While most first-years take general chemistry and calculus, some may follow alternative paths. The major mandates PHYS 10a,b, 11a,b, or 15a,b (Physics I,II) as prerequisites for physical chemistry and advanced lab courses. Finishing physics by sophomore year (recommended) enables students to take these upper-level chemistry courses during junior year.
Each fall, chemistry faculty and current majors host an informational session for prospective students. Individualized academic planning should be developed in consultation with faculty advisors to align with each student's goals and interests.
