At Brandeis, Hispanic Studies goes beyond developing advanced Spanish language skills in speaking, reading, and writing. It involves exploring and valuing the rich cultural variety of Spanish-speaking communities worldwide, both historically and geographically. Your education will combine language instruction with analysis of cinema, visual arts, political systems, and regional contexts.
The major offers multiple specialization tracks: modern Spanish and Latin American cultural studies (19th-21st centuries), Cervantes' works, Latin American colonial and post-colonial studies, early modern Spanish drama, U.S. Latino communities, and media/film studies.
Our department embraces a genuinely cross-disciplinary viewpoint and methodology. You'll study with professors connected to various academic units campus-wide, such as film, theater, comparative literature, Latin American/Latino studies, and gender/sexuality studies. Our nationally renowned faculty members are passionate researchers and dedicated educators. The program's adaptable structure allows you to focus on personal academic interests, including the option to complete a senior research project or thesis.
