Brandeis provides both a traditional chemistry major and a chemical biology specialization for students keen on applying chemical methods to biological research. These options are available for both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, with an accelerated 4-year BA/MA program for highly qualified students. A chemistry minor is also offered.
The key requirement for declaring a chemistry major is a genuine passion for and appreciation of the subject.
Like other scientific disciplines, chemistry courses follow a sequential structure, making early enrollment crucial. While most first-year students take general chemistry and calculus (though not all), the major mandates completing PHYS 10a,b, 11a,b, or 15a,b (Physics I,II) as prerequisites for physical chemistry and advanced lab courses. Finishing physics by sophomore year (recommended) enables students to take these upper-level chemistry courses during junior year.
Each fall, prospective majors can attend a "meet the majors" event to interact with chemistry faculty and current students. Individual academic planning with faculty advisors helps tailor coursework to each student's goals and interests.
