Boston University College of Fine Arts offers a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in sound design that challenges graduate students to develop innovative approaches to theatrical sound for both musical and experimental productions, while cultivating leadership abilities and advanced technical expertise.
BU's MFA sound design program supports students throughout the entire creative process - from initial concept to final implementation. Through sound-driven storytelling and analysis of artistic and technical decisions in coursework and productions, students refine their unique artistic voice as sound designers and collaborative theater practitioners.
The comprehensive training features an intensive curriculum, diverse design projects, opportunities to build creative partnerships with fellow graduate students in directing and design programs, and the development of personalized working methods. Classes typically maintain an intimate size of just two students.
Participants gain professional experience by collaborating with established theater artists from prominent regional theaters, creating pathways to work with external theater organizations.
This 60-credit program follows a sequential structure and is typically completed within two years of continuous study.
