Boston University's Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Playwriting merges academic rigor with practical experience through partnerships with theater professionals. This three-year program, jointly administered by the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GRS) and the College of Fine Arts (CFA) School of Theatre (SOT), prepares graduates for both scholarly and professional theater careers.
The 60-credit curriculum includes: eight playwriting workshops (with two taken each semester during the first two years), sixteen credits in dramatic literature, four credits in play production processes, two elective credits, and six thesis-focused directed study credits. Foreign language proficiency is mandatory.
Students complete their degree by staging their thesis production and may pursue theater internships. Seven of the eight required workshops follow a structured sequence for each entering class.
