The Master of Education (EdM) in Special Education at BU Wheelock College of Education & Human Development helps students build expertise in teaching methods, teamwork, and advocacy through carefully structured courses and regular chances for thoughtful evaluation and guidance. Once admitted, students join an encouraging network of professors, professionals, and fellow learners within the program and college. Each student is paired with a Special Education faculty advisor who offers personalized support throughout their BU Wheelock journey.
The EdM in Special Education provides 11 specialized pathways to accommodate diverse career aspirations and objectives, including teacher certification options. Those not pursuing teaching credentials will follow the general track curriculum while customizing much of their studies with faculty advisor input. These students may also choose the combined degree option in Special Education and Social Work.
Nine pathways include coursework qualifying graduates for Massachusetts teaching licenses in Moderate Disabilities (preK-2, preK-8, or 5-12) or Severe Disabilities (All Levels or preK-2). License-seeking students complete progressive field experiences in Boston-area schools, culminating in a full-term student teaching placement. Wheelock faculty and program supervisors oversee all fieldwork, collaborating with skilled mentor teachers across various educational environments.
