Boston University's Wheelock College of Education & Human Development offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program in Social Studies Education designed to develop thoughtful, reflective educators ready to teach in diverse urban and suburban schools. This program emphasizes inquiry-based teaching methods, multicultural curriculum development, and social justice advocacy.
Graduates meet Massachusetts' initial teacher licensure standards, with credentials recognized across most U.S. states. The flexible one-year program (including summer) offers both on-campus and online course options.
This social studies education program trains professionals for various educational roles, preparing them to teach history, civics, geography, economics, and related subjects in schools, museums, nonprofits, and other learning environments.
Designed for aspiring teachers, this MAT program partners with BU's Graduate School of Arts & Sciences to fulfill Massachusetts' teacher certification requirements, which transfer to most other states.
Students gain hands-on experience through early field placements, school-based pre-practicum work, and a culminating full-time classroom practicum, where they develop and teach inquiry-driven social studies units while assessing student learning.
