The Master of Arts (MA) in Musicology & Ethnomusicology at Boston University's School of Music is designed for aspiring PhD candidates, performing musicians with academic pursuits, and those seeking careers in the music field. Applicants typically hold a bachelor's degree in music or equivalent qualifications.
Our graduate program equips students with foundational knowledge, analytical frameworks, diverse methodologies, and real-world engagement to cultivate top-tier music scholars. We provide up to five years of full financial support for both post-baccalaureate and post-master's students, along with a flexible curriculum featuring an integrated Musicology and Ethnomusicology track.
BU's Musicology & Ethnomusicology program is guided by a dynamic, diverse, and collaborative faculty committed to breaking barriers between academic research and musical practice. Our professors' specialties span medieval music to contemporary pop, covering regions from Indonesia to Japan, Africa, and the Americas, while embracing both written and oral traditions.
