The Romance Studies department provides a rigorous curriculum aimed at fostering a nuanced international outlook. This thorough preparation enables alumni to critically examine varied cultural artifacts and offer meaningful analyses.
French Language & Literature: The MA in French Language & Literature demands superior written and oral French proficiency, completion of eight advanced French literature courses, and passing a comprehensive assessment. Students must complete eight graduate-level courses (500 or above) covering French literature, film studies, critical theory, or cultural analysis. All 800-level French courses are mandatory.
Program objectives:
French Language & Literature: Graduates of the MA in French Language & Literature will exhibit expert-level comprehension of French linguistic and literary traditions throughout historical periods and worldwide settings. They will develop polished writing and research capabilities appropriate for professional settings, along with solid ethical principles. Alumni will attain near-native French fluency for effective written and verbal interactions with native speakers. The curriculum prepares students to instruct advanced high school French courses and provides fundamental qualifications for college-level language teaching positions.
The Master of Arts in French Language and Literature delivers thorough instruction across all facets of French studies. Participants acquire extensive knowledge of French and Francophone literary traditions, their historical development, and significant texts. They also master sophisticated comprehension of academic research practices within the discipline.
Numerous MA alumni have continued to doctoral programs, while others have established careers in education administration and international program coordination.
Full-time students typically complete the terminal MA program within one academic year.
The curriculum includes eight courses: one theoretical seminar, one teaching methodology class, and six literature/film studies courses.
Summer months are dedicated to comprehensive exam preparation, with assessments usually administered in late August.
