This integrated program in fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics equips candidates with clinical expertise and thorough understanding of diagnosing, treatment planning, restoring, and maintaining oral function, comfort, aesthetics, and health for patients with missing or damaged teeth and orofacial abnormalities through biocompatible replacements. The coursework combines classroom learning and hands-on training in complete dentures, removable partial dentures, fixed prosthodontics, implant dentistry (including surgical procedures), geriatric care, TMJ disorders, and maxillofacial prosthetics, with strong focus on both theoretical foundations and practical skills in these prosthodontic specialties.
Special attention is given to maintaining patients' periodontal health and collaborating with other dental specialties to ensure comprehensive care. This interdisciplinary approach is facilitated through joint seminars with other specialty programs and coordinated treatment strategies.
An essential component of the curriculum involves rigorous, structured reading assignments and literature review sessions, which familiarize students with core prosthodontic principles, evidence-based practice, and critical analysis of dental research.
The program adheres to accreditation standards set by the Commission on Dental Accreditation for advanced prosthodontic education and aligns with the comprehensive specialty certification exam administered by the American Board of Prosthodontics.
Admission to the DScD track is highly selective. Participants must fulfill all biomedical science and clinical requirements of the CAGS program, plus complete significant original research, a doctoral dissertation, and its oral defense. The combined CAGS/DScD program demands a minimum of 60 months of full-time study.
