The French & Linguistics program allows students to merge the examination of human language through multiple viewpoints with French language, literature, and cultural studies. In linguistics classes, students investigate language's formal frameworks (phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics) along with linguistic universals, cross-language variations, sociolinguistic aspects, and language evolution. Simultaneously, they master core French grammar and pronunciation principles, enhance their written and oral French proficiency, and refine their comprehension skills. They develop insights into French and Francophone cultural and literary heritage while learning to critically evaluate significant artistic and literary works. Bridging both disciplines, French linguistics coursework examines the language's historical progression, global variations, or distinctive features compared to other languages. Collaborative projects and faculty mentorship regularly facilitate interdisciplinary connections between the major's dual focus. International study is highly recommended and, with proper preparation, easily integrated.
