This interdisciplinary program provides students with diverse perspectives on religion as a cultural force, exploring how people engage with their social contexts to develop belief systems and rituals that help interpret the world.
The curriculum requires twelve courses (six in religion and six in anthropology) completed with a C grade or better, including Anthropology of Religion (taken as either CAS AN 384 or CAS RN 387, but not both). Students earning a BA in this combined major cannot declare a second major in either religion or anthropology. Additional coursework in both fields is encouraged beyond the required twelve classes. Honors candidates must complete a thirteenth course, AN 462, during their junior or senior year (see honors requirements below). Students should work closely with their program advisor to tailor their studies to their academic interests. For more details about the joint program, consult the program advisor or the Undergraduate Studies directors in either department.
