The English Department's interdisciplinary MA and PhD programs cover three major historical periods, with a particular focus on textual studies. Follow the links below to discover each academic discipline and check the sidebar for more details. Leveraging our expertise in textual research, Loyola's English Department has launched a new interdisciplinary Textual Studies program. This venture enables students to engage in conferences and seminars featuring Loyola professors and distinguished guest speakers, collaborate with faculty on research initiatives, and explore innovative courses while potentially developing their own research in this dynamic interdisciplinary field. Starting Fall 2011, students can also enroll in the new digital humanities MA program. Textual Studies examines source materials—whether handwritten, printed, or digital—and analyzes the creative processes of writing, editing, publishing, dissemination, and audience reception. Inherently cross-disciplinary, this field plays a vital role in literary analysis across all eras, as well as in philosophy, history, music, religious studies, and media scholarship. Today, it forms the cornerstone of digital humanities—the examination of electronic texts and media, along with the use of computational methods in humanities research.
