Ball State's English Language Arts teaching program equips you for a career in secondary education. Throughout this program, you'll study English and communications content alongside specialized classroom methodology courses, all mentored by our faculty with extensive public school experience and educational scholarship. Graduates who complete the program, including a student teaching semester, earn certification to teach English/Language Arts and Communications in Indiana secondary schools. This major specifically prepares educators for middle and high school settings, featuring: foundational English and communication coursework meeting licensure standards, a specialization track in either English or communications for deeper subject mastery, and teaching methods classes that develop instructional skills while fulfilling professional education requirements. Your advancement in the program will be tracked through the Unit Assessment System (UAS), requiring you to demonstrate competency at key evaluation points to maintain enrollment in teacher education courses.
