How rewarding it is to assist a child in improving their hearing, enabling fuller participation in family and school life. Or to support an adult overcoming speech challenges to present confidently in professional settings. Or to guide a stroke survivor in regaining their ability to speak.
The dedicated experts in these fields are audiologists and speech-language pathologists. Audiologists specialize in identifying, preventing, and managing hearing and balance issues. Speech-language pathologists focus on assessing and treating speech, language, and swallowing difficulties. While distinct professions, they share a common foundation in human communication sciences.
AUM's Department of Communication Disorders offers personalized, engaging education and practical training for undergraduates, covering both theoretical and applied aspects of communication sciences and disorders. This prepares students for advanced studies and diverse career paths. Faculty in this program maintain certifications from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and Alabama state licensure. Academic instructors teach developmental theories and disorder foundations, while clinical supervisors guide students in applying this knowledge.
