Renowned photographer Garry Winogrand once observed, "The artist's challenge lies in defining the question." This means artists aim to provoke thought and exploration rather than provide solutions. At AUM, we teach you to develop a fine art photographer's mindset. It's not just about mastering technical skills to create flawless images, but about effectively conveying ideas to your audience. Our Fine Arts Department provides a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a Photography specialization. Students begin with film photography fundamentals that form the groundwork for all subsequent photo and video studies. Will Fenn, Photography Chair and Associate Professor at AUM, notes that film's limited exposures teach photographers to thoughtfully plan and frame each shot. This disciplined approach leads to more intentional and efficient image-making. AUM's Photography program gives you real-world experience with both film and digital formats. Small class sizes foster meaningful engagement between students and instructors, while visiting professional photographers share industry insights.
This concentration blends comprehensive visual arts education with specialized photography training and liberal arts coursework, preparing graduates for diverse careers in advertising, marketing, journalism, social media, business ventures, and beyond.
As a photography student, you'll develop a professional portfolio, learn from accomplished artist-educators, and find creative expression within our nurturing, collaborative community.
