Our program originates from community journalism. Whether located in rural or urban settings, community news organizations share a unifying purpose: they empower communities by thoroughly reporting on local matters and demonstrating how residents can participate in democracy. As a community journalist, you must be prepared to report on diverse topics ranging from municipal elections and school functions to emergencies like fires and traffic incidents, delivering stories across both print and digital formats. The Community Journalism specialization equips students with fundamental journalism skills, specialized knowledge in community reporting, capabilities to investigate and present urgent news and detailed features, plus practical training with modern multimedia technologies. By taking elective courses outside journalism, students gain insights into municipal governance, community development processes, lawmaking procedures, the justice system, and the historical context of societal challenges and public assistance programs.
