The MM program in performance with a concentration in conducting offers orchestra, wind band, and vocal ensemble conductors the chance to enhance their abilities, refine their artistry, and deepen their scholarly knowledge to advance both professional and academic goals. This program also supports choir, orchestra, and wind band instructors in public schools seeking to improve their conducting expertise.
This concentration features four specialized tracks-

Wind band track: Conductors in this track receive one-on-one instruction from the director of bands while collaborating with other faculty members, including the director of athletic bands, to refine their conducting and rehearsal techniques.
Since podium experience is crucial for skill development, wind band conductors gain ample opportunities to lead the ASU Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony, assist with the Maroon Band, and co-direct the Gold Band. Additionally, they can work with the ASU Chamber Winds, a graduate-level ensemble, twice weekly.
Orchestral track: Tailored for orchestral conductors, this track includes specialized coursework in orchestral conducting, supplemented by elective options for further study.
Music direction track: Designed for musical theatre and opera conductors, this track emphasizes rehearsal techniques, technical production, and repertoire specific to these genres.
Choral track: This track equips conductors for diverse choral careers by fostering their unique artistic expression. Students explore culturally responsive approaches, decolonial teaching methods, global repertoire, and interdisciplinary gesture techniques, all while receiving extensive podium time under faculty guidance.
