The PhD program in exploration systems design takes a sophisticated systems-based approach to creating technologies for scientific exploration in challenging terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments.
This interdisciplinary degree serves as a distinctive training ground for systems engineers focused on advancing exploration technologies. Offered jointly by the School of Earth and Space Exploration and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, it enables specialization in areas like space exploration, astronomical tools, robotic systems, and sensor network development.
The program combines fundamental courses in science, instrumentation, and systems engineering from the School of Earth and Space Exploration with complementary engineering coursework. The instrumentation track equips students to design cutting-edge sensing technologies for planetary studies, earth observation, and astronomical research, whether deployed remotely or on-site.
