Special educators positively impact children's and families' lives. They possess a deep interest in understanding learning processes and human development across all life stages. A degree in special education equips students to appreciate diversity, enhance communication abilities, and cultivate problem-solving approaches that benefit both themselves and those they serve.
The Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) for special education trains graduates to support K-12 students with disabilities in inclusive classroom environments. Future educators master research-backed teaching methods that help students succeed with core subjects, employing effective strategies for literacy, mathematics, sciences, and social studies. They acquire specialized methods for students with disabilities and become proficient in educational technologies that enhance learning accessibility.
The program incorporates hands-on professional experiences that showcase diverse teaching methodologies. These practicums and student teaching placements occur during the final two years, offering aspiring teachers repeated chances to engage directly with young learners. Under the guidance of certified mentor teachers and ASU faculty supervisors, students apply their academic knowledge in real-world educational settings.
Upon completion, graduates qualify for the Standard Professional Mild/Moderate Disabilities Special Education Certificate (K-12). Arizona public school teaching candidates must successfully complete required state examinations: either the National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments.
