Middle and high school educators play a vital role in sparking intellectual curiosity, changing lives, and building stronger communities. Through a combination of academic studies, hands-on internships, and teaching residencies, this program equips you to earn teaching credentials upon graduation and educate students in grades 6-12. The Bachelor of Arts in Education with an English specialization emphasizes merging technology with instruction while building English language arts expertise, offering practical training to cultivate effective classroom teaching techniques.
At Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, we've pioneered a collaborative model for teacher development. This approach enables students to gain professional experience (through internships and residencies) alongside peer teams, while benefiting from mentorship by ASU professors and accomplished certified educators. These team-based learning opportunities prepare future teachers to collaborate with colleagues in meeting students' academic and emotional needs. The core objective is to give students repeated chances to implement theoretical knowledge in real classroom settings.
The program includes sequential internships culminating in a full-time, semester-long teaching residency. Guided by certified mentor teachers and ASU faculty, students translate academic concepts into practical teaching strategies within actual learning environments.
Upon completing this program, graduates receive both a bachelor's degree in their subject area and an ASU institutional recommendation accepted by the Arizona Department of Education for Secondary Education (6-12) certification. For Arizona secondary teaching certification, candidates must additionally pass either the National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments professional knowledge examination.
