Equip future generations with the skills and knowledge to maintain active, healthy lifestyles. Our specialized curriculum combines academic study with hands-on team internships and residencies, enabling you to earn teaching certification upon graduation and enter this high-need educational field. The Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) in Physical Education trains students to deliver exceptional physical education programs for learners from preschool through 12th grade.
The program's content meets national new teacher standards set by The Society of Health and Physical Education Teachers of America. Foundational courses explore motor development, movement fundamentals, and lifelong fitness. The curriculum addresses teaching methods for elementary, secondary, and adaptive physical education, covering instructional design, lesson planning, and P-12 learner accommodations. Students develop expertise in creating effective learning environments, assessing student progress, and maintaining professional ethics.
Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College employs a collaborative model for teacher preparation, where students gain practical experience (through internships and residencies) alongside peer teams while receiving mentorship from ASU faculty and certified educators. These team-based experiences prepare future teachers to collaborate with colleagues in addressing students' academic and social-emotional needs. The professional experiences focus on applying classroom knowledge to real-world teaching situations.
The program includes multiple internships followed by a full-semester teaching residency. Under the guidance of certified mentors and ASU faculty, students implement their coursework learning in actual educational settings.
Graduates qualify for Arizona Department of Education certification in P-12 Physical Education and receive a Structured English Immersion endorsement. Public school teaching requires passing Arizona's educator certification exams (either the National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments).
