The Master of Arts in International Economics (INEC) is designed for students with prior economics coursework, equipping them for professional roles as international economists. This program enables graduates to examine critical global trade and financial matters through theoretical, empirical, political-economic, and policy lenses. A collaborative offering between the School of International Service and American University's Economics Department, INEC delivers a challenging curriculum combining economic theory, international relations, global political economy, policy formulation, and quantitative methods with an emphasis on international trade and finance. Graduates emerge ready to work as international economists across multilateral organizations, government bodies, multinational corporations, advocacy groups, trade associations, and research centers.

The INEC degree involves 39 graduate credit hours, achievable in two years of full-time study or up to six years part-time. Its policy-focused coursework covers international political economy, diverse institutional and policy challenges, plus intensive training in economic theory and quantitative research techniques. Students also gain hands-on experience with advanced statistical software employed in economic research and policy work. The program concludes with a capstone project tackling a pressing issue in today's international economic landscape.
