Provided by the School of International Service, the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development concentration is exclusively offered via the exchange partnership with the United Nations-affiliated University for Peace in Costa Rica. Participants earn dual degrees from both American University and the University for Peace. This program prepares learners with essential competencies for addressing ecological development challenges worldwide while fostering connections that help bridge the gap between developed and developing nations. Graduates gain the expertise to craft sustainable development policies across local, national, and international scales, promote collaborative approaches to environmental policy-making, and develop techniques for resolving ecological disputes.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must hold an earned bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by one of the six United States regional accreditation agencies or a degree equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree from an international institution with a similar level of accreditation or recognition by its home country.
All applicants must submit two letters of reference evaluating undergraduate academic performance and suitability for graduate study in international affairs, at least one of which should be from an academic source.

The minimum TOEFL score for full admissions consideration is 100 on the Internet-based test (iBT) or 600 on the paper-based test (PBT). The minimum IELTS score is 7.0.
