The doctoral program mandates a thesis with a maximum length of 90,000 words, which full-time candidates must complete within three years and part-time students within six years. Similar to our on-campus PhD, our Distance Learning PhD also requires a 90,000-word dissertation with identical submission timelines for both full-time and part-time students.

This option is perfect for individuals whose personal circumstances make regular travel to York impractical. Although participants must attend in person for at least two weeks each academic year (for registration, training, advisory panel meetings, and the annual PhD conference), the program enables research to be conducted internationally while maintaining access to online support and virtual training sessions. Reliable internet access and availability of appropriate library or archival resources are fundamental requirements for this program.
