Alongside the Department's standard taught programs, students can pursue their MA in Sociology through a Research Dissertation pathway. This option involves conducting an in-depth independent research project with regular guidance from a supervisor (with a minimum of two meetings each semester).
Our MA by Research program offers flexible study options, available both part-time and full-time, with the choice of on-campus or distance learning. While we recommend distance learners visit campus for the initial orientation (typically in September), all subsequent supervision occurs remotely through video calls. Regardless of your chosen study mode, the awarded degree remains identical (MA by Research in Sociology).

This is particularly appropriate for students with a focused interest in a particular area of sociology, who have already developed a firm basis for their chosen research topic.
Students who have successfully completed a recent undergraduate degree at a UK University are exempt from the English Language requirement.
