From vintage cassette tapes to the resurgence of vinyl and worldwide streaming platforms, recorded audio has transformed into our main medium for musical enjoyment.
At York, our Music and Sound Recording (BA) program recognizes that music creation and production are now inseparable artistic disciplines. This course empowers you to cultivate a personalized combination of intellectual, technical, and musical abilities.
You'll acquire hands-on training in audio engineering and recording methods crucial for careers in music technology. Core modules will teach you to record, mix, and master diverse musical styles, spanning pop, rock, classical, and more. Our adaptable, modular structure allows you to customize your education to match your interests and professional goals. Alongside specialized course modules, you can select from options available to all Music undergraduates.

Our five state-of-the-art recording studios provide access to six decades of audio technology: classic tape machines, analog synthesizers, premium outboard gear and mixing consoles, plus various digital audio workstations.
With our dedicated career support and expanding internship program, you can gain real-world experience before completing your degree. Alumni have pursued careers in recording studios, radio broadcasting, Dolby Atmos mixing, audio software/hardware development, and successful artistic practices.

Qualification Requirements

A levels
AAB including A in Music Technology or Music
If you are not taking A level Music or Music Technology we will accept AAB in three A Levels plus ABRSM or Trinity Grade 5 Theory and Grade 7 Performance. Other equivalent qualifications and exam boards may be considered on a case by case basis.

Access to Higher Education Diploma 36 credits from units awarded Distinction and 9 awarded Merit or higher. An additional A Level or equivalent qualification in Music or Music Technology will be required.
BTEC National Extended Diploma DDD in Music or Music Technology. If you are taking a BTEC in a different subject, an additional A Level or equivalent qualification in Music or Music Technology will be required.
Cambridge Pre-U D3, D3, M2 including D3 in Music
European Baccalaureate 80% overall, including 85% in Music
International Baccalaureate 35 points including 6 in Music at Higher Level IELTS (Academic and Indicator) 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component TOEFL 87 overall, with a minimum of 21 in each component
