Why select this program? Our Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for Secondary Education delivers top-tier training for aspiring secondary school teachers. This program aligns with the Department for Education's requirements for Initial Teacher Training programs. The Secondary Education PGCE is carefully structured to qualify graduates for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - the essential certification for teaching in state-maintained schools. If you're passionate about science, especially biological processes and living organisms, and enjoy hands-on exploration, our biology specialization is ideal for you. The curriculum focuses on core scientific principles taught in modern classrooms and how students grasp these concepts. Trainees will master teaching biology to students aged 11-16, with opportunities to extend to primary and post-16 levels. You'll cultivate teaching expertise through both university-based instruction and practical school placements. Graduates earn both QTS recommendation and 60 Master's-level credits. Program structure During this year-long course, you'll engage in university learning and school placements. The program includes 120 days divided between at least two secondary school placements (ages 11-16). Dedicated university tutors provide continuous support, helping you refine reflective teaching practices. We prioritize high-quality placements where you'll observe experienced educators, co-teach, and receive classroom feedback. Each module demonstrates effective teaching methods to help shape your personal pedagogy - active participation in your professional growth is essential. The course employs diverse teaching approaches to prepare you for real classrooms: instructor-led discussions, student-centered activities, collaborative learning, problem-solving tasks, digital resources, and personalized goals. Assessment methods include written work, classroom research, school-based tasks, and evaluation of teaching performance.
