Our Master's in Translation and Interpreting welcomes both native and non-native English speakers fluent in Chinese, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. This program enhances your linguistic abilities while offering comprehensive professional preparation for careers in translation and interpretation. You'll develop expertise in translating and interpreting between English and your primary language, learning to research specialized topics while refining your skills through practical coursework and Skills Lab sessions. Core modules will be supplemented by elective options, culminating in either a Translation/Interpreting Project or dissertation. The specialized translation component covers bidirectional work between English and your target language, while interpreting studies focus on conference and public service interpretation. Our innovative Skills Lab replicates real-world environments through simulated translation agencies and mock conferences, bridging theory and practice. The Professional Development module enhances career readiness with workshops on CV preparation, continuing professional development, guest lectures, and volunteer opportunities. Our program holds prestigious accreditations, including partnership with the Chartered Institute of Linguists and membership in key professional organizations like CIUTI and the UN MoU Network. Graduates pursue successful careers as professional linguists or researchers, with our Elia Exchange membership facilitating valuable work placements during and after the program.
A minimum of a lower second class honours degree (2:2). Linguists without a degree but with sufficient experience in translation and/or interpreting will also be considered. All applicants must take an entry test consisting of written and oral components. If you are successful in the entry tests, we will interview you in person or on the telephone to determine if the Translation and Interpreting MA is right for you. The course is open to native speakers of Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, and Spanish. If your first language is not English, you should have an IELTS 6.5 with 7.0 in speaking and a minimum of 6.0 in all other components. TOEFL (IBT) 88 overall with a minimum of 17 in Listening, 21 in Writing, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking.
