The Engineering PhD/MPhil program combines rigorous academics with hands-on practice. Warwick's School of Engineering has carefully structured this program to help students develop essential research capabilities and expertise.
Initially, candidates enroll for an MPhil degree unless the Board of Graduate Studies grants special approval. Based on satisfactory progress, students may transition to PhD candidacy.
A PhD dissertation must demonstrate significant original research contributions that meet standards for peer-reviewed publication. The work should present clear, logical arguments with thorough source documentation, including comprehensive references and detailed methodology where applicable.
PhD theses in the Faculty of Science must not exceed 70,000 words (excluding supplementary materials like appendices, footnotes, tables, and bibliographies). Appendices collectively cannot surpass 5,000 words.
Candidates must successfully complete an oral defense (viva voce) covering both their thesis and its academic field. Examiners may additionally require written or practical assessments. Satisfactory performance in all examination components is mandatory for degree completion.
