Biochemistry explores life at its most fundamental level – examining the molecules and cells that compose living beings. It stands among four degree programs offered by the School of Life Sciences. Ideal for students passionate about both biology and chemistry, this program delves into protein and nucleic acid structures, gene expression regulation, membrane functions, antibody and hormone mechanisms, and cellular interactions within complex organisms.Program structureAfter establishing a strong biochemical foundation, the curriculum expands into specialized areas like biophysical chemistry, which analyzes biological macromolecules at atomic scales, and explores genome dynamics and genetic control. With diverse elective options, you can tailor your studies to match your interests. Graduates will possess a thorough grasp of biochemical principles underlying molecular, cellular, and developmental processes across various life forms. Our tutorial system provides robust academic and personal guidance, complemented by extensive hands-on laboratory experience. The four-year MBio with Industrial Placement includes a final-year research project conducted within an industry setting.Career opportunitiesIn your final year, you'll complete a 12-month industry research placement. Past students have worked with organizations like University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire's Assisted Reproduction Unit, AstraZeneca in Sweden, GSK, and Novartis. These supervised research projects span multiple scientific disciplines, enhancing skills in scientific writing, data analysis, and IT applications. While placements aren't guaranteed, we provide comprehensive support to help secure positions. Many BSc and MBio students also pursue vacation work placements, with guidance available for applications and interview preparation.Career prospectsOur graduates have launched careers with prominent employers including:AstraZenecaNHSUK Civil ServiceKPMGJohnson & JohnsonTeslaALS: Sarstedt LtdNovartisAcademic institutions and educational organizations.
