Biochemistry explores life at its most fundamental level – examining the molecules and cells that compose living organisms. As one of four degree programs offered by the School of Life Sciences, this course is ideal for students passionate about both biology and chemistry. You'll investigate protein and nucleic acid structures, gene expression regulation, membrane functions, antibody and hormone mechanisms, and cellular behavior within multicellular systems. Program structure After establishing a strong biochemical foundation, the curriculum expands into specialized areas like biophysical chemistry (studying biological macromolecules at atomic scales) and genomics. With diverse elective options, you can tailor your studies to match your interests, graduating with comprehensive knowledge of biochemical processes across organisms. Our tutorial system provides academic guidance alongside extensive laboratory training. Internship opportunities A year-long industry placement is available after your second year, offering valuable professional experience. Placements span various sectors, both lab-based and non-technical, with dual supervision from academic and workplace mentors. These experiences develop transferable skills, expand professional networks, and boost career prospects. While placements aren't guaranteed, we provide robust support for securing positions.
