Theatre stands as literature's most openly public and politically engaged medium. Our English and Theatre Studies (BA) program highlights the interplay between written works and live performance, exploring how theatre actively shapes historical narratives to drive societal and political transformation.
Led by specialists from both English and Comparative Literary Studies and Theatre and Performance Studies departments, this program focuses on the dynamic connections between playwrights, texts, performers, critics, performance spaces, and society - all examined through historical, political, and cultural lenses. Students enjoy regular access to world-class productions at Stratford-upon-Avon's renowned theaters and Warwick's own Arts Centre.
Theatre coursework traces the evolution of performance theory and practice, analyzing plays that reflect both theatrical traditions and political movements to demonstrate how historical developments influence contemporary theater. English Literature components involve deep textual analysis from classical to modern works, investigating political themes, literary forms, and interpretive meanings. Throughout the program, students hone critical analysis skills, develop persuasive written and oral arguments, and cultivate independent thinking, discernment, and creative expression.
