A classical studies degree provides comprehensive and adaptable training that cultivates advanced abilities in analytical thinking, communication, and creative problem-solving. Our Classical Civilisation with Study in Europe (BA) program is an expansive, customizable degree focused on exploring the literature, history, philosophy, languages, art, and archaeology of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Your third year will be spent studying at one of our European partner institutions.Program highlightsThis flexible, broad-based degree concentrates on examining the literary works, historical events, philosophical ideas, linguistic systems, artistic expressions, and archaeological findings from classical antiquity. The curriculum offers diverse subject options - including gender studies in ancient societies, political systems like democracy and imperialism, classical Greek drama, Roman humor, or medical history - while honing skills in literary interpretation, historical evaluation, and interdisciplinary methodologies. Our teaching methods are diverse, creative, and engaging, with students enjoying practical learning opportunities such as reconstructing Greek social gatherings, exploring UK historical locations and museums, and participating in our yearly classical theater production.Foundational first-year courses establish essential frameworks for understanding Greek and Roman cultural contexts while introducing the breadth of classical literature and philosophy. The four-year European study variant mirrors our three-year program's structure but incorporates modern language study (currently Italian or German) and a year abroad at a European partner university specializing in classical studies.Current placement options include institutions in Bologna, Padua, Rome, or Venice, with newly confirmed opportunities in Berlin and Tübingen, Germany. Final placement confirmation occurs during your second year.Career prospectsClassics alumni have secured positions with organizations such as:ActurisCancer Research UKComic ReliefEnglish HeritageEYJohn Lewis PartnershipKPMGTeach FirstThe British MuseumWaitrose & PartnersCareer paths pursued include:Archaeological positionsBusiness and professional services rolesEvent planning and coordinationFinancial analysis and advisory servicesLegal support professionsManagement consultingMarketing specialistsEducation professionals.
