Our Doctor of Philosophy in Human Rights takes an innovative interdisciplinary approach, bridging social sciences and humanities disciplines. As a doctoral candidate, you'll explore human rights through diverse perspectives that extend beyond conventional legal frameworks. You'll: receive guidance from faculty supervisors with expertise across multiple fields, including social sciences, humanities, and legal studies leverage our extensive global connections for research partnerships and academic exchange join a vibrant community of doctoral students and early-career researchers associated with the Sussex Rights and Justice Research Centre, while engaging in the Centre's research seminars and academic events.

Qualification Requirements

Degree requirements: You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% of overall) in a master’s degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree. Subject-specific requirements: Your qualification must be in a subject area relevant to your chosen area of research. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing. We also offer a 1+3 route incorporating the MSc in Social Research Methods or further specialist research training modules within Year 1 for those without the required research training. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic) High level (6.5 overall, including at least 6.0 in each component); TOEFL (iBT) - 88 overall, including at least 20 in Listening, 19 in Reading, 21 in Speaking, 23 in Writing.
