We invite PhD applications across diverse fields, from Shakespearean studies and modern literature to literary criticism, Derrida, Freud, and the intersection of creative and critical writing. Our English department boasts exceptional research quality, with over 90% of faculty work recognized as world-leading in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). As a doctoral candidate, you'll receive guidance from distinguished scholars at the forefront of their disciplines.
We offer both PhD and MPhil programs, which vary in duration and research scope.

A PhD requires your research to significantly advance knowledge in your selected field through original contributions.
An MPhil involves independent research with a narrower focus than a PhD, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. You may have the opportunity to transition from an MPhil to a PhD during your studies.
