Course introductionThis innovative program, marking BSMS's inaugural postgraduate offering in nuclear medicine, leverages expertise from top educators in the field to provide distinctive and adaptable learning opportunities in this dynamic, growing, and vital medical specialty.Nuclear medicine encompasses all diagnostic, therapeutic, and research applications of radioactive materials, excluding sealed radiation sources used in radiotherapy (as defined by WHO).This critical healthcare specialty intersects with numerous medical disciplines across all age groups, from newborns to elderly patients, playing a fundamental role in managing various cancers, heart conditions, infections, inflammatory disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases.In the UK, nuclear medicine practice operates under strict regulations, requiring practitioners to meet IR(ME)R and ARSAC standards to oversee services. Consequently, nuclear medicine specialists must fulfill rigorous educational criteria to maintain high-quality care standards.Our postgraduate diploma program provides comprehensive training in both diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine, meeting the General Medical Council's (GMC) curriculum requirements for nuclear medicine specialists, with full GMC accreditation.Target audienceThis nationally distinctive program serves as the GMC-required Knowledge Based Assessment (PGDip) for Nuclear Medicine Physicians in Higher Specialty Training. It has received endorsement from the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board and inclusion in the GMC-approved curriculum.

Qualification Requirements

The programme is open to post-registration doctors involved in nuclear medicine and any healthcare graduates allied to or seeking to further extend their scope of practice in nuclear medicine, including but not limited to: nuclear medicine technologists, radiographers, nurses, clinical scientists, and imaging and non-imaging specialty doctors.

Trainees entering the Nuclear Medicine Specialty Training Programme are expected to apply in line with the GMC approved curriculum.

Applicants may be interviewed depending on the strength of their applications. They will be expected to be aware of the latest trends and developments in nuclear medicine.

Claims for the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be considered with a maximum of 50% of the total credits permitted.

Applications are welcomed from International students with appropriate qualifications and experience. Students for whom English is not a first language must demonstrate an acceptable standard of comprehension and communication in the English Language (IELTS; minimum overall score of 7.0 and 7.0 in the writing element).
