Pursuing a PhD in Popular Music Practice involves creating a portfolio of original musical works. Your compositions and performances will critically examine and push the boundaries of contemporary music practices. Alongside your creative output, you'll complete a 20,000-40,000 word thesis presenting novel research. This academic work will demonstrate how your artistic practice contributes significantly to your field while engaging with current scholarship. The Jonathan Harvey Electronic Music Studio at the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts provides cutting-edge technology, supplemented by specialized resources including rare musical scores and exclusive jazz and music documentary collections.
The program offers both PhD and MPhil options, differing in research scope and duration. A PhD requires groundbreaking contributions to your field, while an MPhil involves substantial but more limited independent research, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. Students may have the opportunity to upgrade from MPhil to PhD during their studies.
