In our PhD program for Musical Composition, you'll explore and create innovative musical expressions. This involves compiling a portfolio of original works along with an analytical critique. The Jonathan Harvey Electronic Music Studio offers cutting-edge software and hardware resources. Additional specialized assets include rare 20th-century musical manuscripts and exclusive archives of jazz and music television documentaries. Our composition faculty specializes in diverse areas including: operatic works, orchestral and chamber pieces, electronic and computer-generated music, as well as scores for film and media. Students may pursue either a PhD or MPhil degree. These programs vary in length and research scope. A PhD requires significant original contributions to musical knowledge, while an MPhil involves independent research at a more introductory level, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. Students may have the option to transition from MPhil to PhD during their studies.
