Building on Sussex's legacy as a pioneer in this academic discipline, we merge time-honored scholarship with support for innovative research areas. Our faculty provides specialized supervision in: British political philosophy (1500-1900), Renaissance intellectual movements, the Scottish Enlightenment and 18th-century political theory, and 19th-century European political thought. We particularly encourage exceptional proposals in related fields that align with Sussex's cross-disciplinary methodology in intellectual history, traditionally integrating history, literature, philosophy, classics, political science, economics, and religious studies. Students may pursue either a PhD or MPhil degree. These programs vary in length and research scope. PhD candidates produce significant original contributions to their field, while MPhil students conduct independent research at a more focused level, earning a Master of Philosophy degree. There may be opportunities to transition from MPhil to PhD during your studies.
